But what happens when Dick and Jane start looking a little closer at the world they’ve been given?
That’s where “Dick and Jane” comes in.
The newest release from Dizzy O’Brian and Dizzy and the Dreamers takes the familiar kindergarten primer and gives it a decidedly more mischievous—and slightly punk-rock—turn.
It’s playful. It’s irreverent. And underneath all that, it’s asking some rather uncomfortable questions.
What is society?
What is reality?
What is the universe?
And who gets to decide what any of those things are supposed to look like?
A Different Side of Dizzy Rock
“Dick and Jane” is also part of something I’ve been enjoying more and more with Dizzy Rock—letting the music get a little rough around the edges.
The Dizzyverse has plenty of mythology, surrealism, strange characters, philosophical questions, and things that shouldn’t logically be possible.
But it doesn’t always have to be airy-fairy.
Sometimes you just need to plug in the guitar, turn up the volume, and let Dick and Jane loose.
This slightly punk/rock approach fits surprisingly well alongside the other sides of Dizzy Rock. The styles may be different, but the underlying idea is the same:
Tell a story.
Make it interesting.
And, if possible, make it smile.
See Dick. See Jane. See the Universe.
“Dick and Jane” takes those two familiar characters and gives them a much bigger playground.
The kindergarten primer taught us how to read.
Maybe this song is about learning how to read the world.
Or maybe it’s just Dick and Jane discovering that the universe isn’t nearly as simple as the book made it seem.
